Periodontal Therapy

Specializing in non-surgical deep cleaning, Minnehaha Family Dentistry provides periodontal therapy and treatments to aid in preventing and treating periodontal disease (Gingivitis and Periodontitis), ensuring your smile remains healthy and naturally beautiful for years to come.

What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is a highly specialized area of dentistry that treats the areas around the teeth. Periodontal services focus on the gums, the alveolar bone (‘jaw bone’), the cementum and the periodontal ligament. All of these structures work together to help support the teeth, and they’re vital to a healthy mouth and smile.

Why is Periodontics Important?

Periodontics helps prevent periodontal disease. Periodontal disease (Periodontitis) is a bacterial infection of the gums and bones. Recent research has shown that bacteria in the mouth doesn’t stay in the mouth – it can travel through the bloodstream to the body’s organs.

This type of bacteria is not good for the body, and more and more studies are showing that bad bacteria from the mouth is actually increasing the risk of other health-related issues, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Stroke
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pre-term and low birth-weight babies

Mouth health is vital to whole body health, and it starts with taking care of one’s teeth, gums and mouth.

Do I have Periodontal Disease?

A report for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently found that 47.2% of adults 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease. The earliest form of periodontal disease is gingivitis, which is when the bacteria irritate the gums and cause them to become inflamed and bleed.

Signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Red, puffy bleeding gums
  • Foul odor or taste in the mouth
  • Loose, shifting teeth
  • Gums that recede or shrink and make the teeth appear longer

If you have any of the above symptoms, the good news is that treatment is available. Minnehaha Family Dentistry is trained in identifying the beginnings of gum disease, as well as advanced cases of periodontitis, and provide a number of services to help bring the mouth back to good order.

Minnehaha’s Periodontal Services

At Minnehaha Family Dentistry, our periodontal services include periodontal therapy, cleanings, sealants, and fluoride treatments:

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal Therapy is a non-surgical deep cleaning (scaling and root planning) procedure. It can greatly help in reducing inflammation and bacterial debris below the gumline. This provides a smooth, clean surface to which the gum can reattach, reducing pocket depth.

Our friendly doctor and dental professionals provide professional teeth cleaning to remove dental plaque to help prevent cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Your teeth will also be polished, which helps in the look and feel while protecting them from future plaque accumulation.

Dental sealants are a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of your teeth — usually the back teeth (the premolars and molars) — to prevent tooth decay. The sealant quickly bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, forming a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatment involves topical application of fluoride directly to the teeth. This treatment is used to prevent tooth decay.
